 In Olden Days

All were in amazement everywhere
Everyone just knew he wouldn't be there
Slowly he climbed the circular stair
To the room at the end of the hall
All could hear his echoing footsteps fall
Across the polished parquet floor
As he approached the parlor door
His attitude seemed devil may care....

 *

Slowing his stride, swinging the door open wide
He took note of everyone seated inside
Steeled his courage and swallowed his pride
Walked up to the lady at table's end
Spoke as loudly as the occasion would lend
His voice quavered a bit as he spoke
He wasn't used to such gentrified folk
And to their lifestyle he never applied...

 *

So to the lady he turned, took a wide stance
"I was wondering madam, if perchance
You and I might engage in a proper romance"
Oohs and gasps sounded 'round the room
He sensed a feeling of impending doom
Backed himself against the nearest wall
But not from cowardice or fear, not at all
Then he saw her give him a smiling glance....

 *

He turned, opened the door and took his leave
Inwardly he thought, 'her smile does not deceive'
She could love me in return I firmly believe
I shall put my best foot forward from this day
When time is right, I shall spirit her away
Meanwhile, my cabin I shall put in proper style
She shall be my bride in an appropriate while
And to each other we shall forever cleave....
