Back When A BoyAway back when a country boy Was ever so keen to have a go- Back when everything was simplicity And boys were just so keen to know- When the very smell of hay and the land Was the smell that they longed for- And not being afraid to work at all They'd be out amongst all they adored- The machines of the day and the hay And all that went with same- A country boy thought it would always be But along came progress and all that changed- Was not long and all he loved in life Was just about all done now with a new machine- And he saw so many still willing and able to work Sitting around like cabbages green- One had to have a degree now to do these things All he'd done for years without one at all- And the old machines now rusting out and about No longer useful and as day and night would fall- So many country boys back then with broken dreams As the bigger places they made sure- That little farms they simply all went broke As they could not compete not any more- His boy hood country dream was over for him To one day always do as he had learned- And in the way they did in his day As each day and nights candle burned- Back then all were happy with what they had And never wanted more and more all of the time- They simply did each and every day the same As they always had right down the line- And now grown older he thinks back to when Remembers all he loved so back in the day- When he learned all he thought he'd ever need to know But progress it took it all away- Terrence Michael Sutton copyright 2008 Poetry Ad-Free Upgrades Vote for this poem
