 REUNION

It was meant to be a reunion of all my old high school friends
Celebrating the occasion of so many of us living this long
There were those who had come to an untimely end
Some who followed a crooked trail and gone completely wrong...

Amazingly, out of over a hundred in the graduating class
Enough of us somehow survived for this our fiftieth year
We made it here, although many of us were fading fast
While others were aided by all sorts of mechanical gear....

Sweet Mary Ellen still has that beautiful friendly smile,
Sixty-eight years young and she's the prettiest one of all.
I used to sit across the room and just stare awhile
But her look at me? With her boyfriend handsome and tall....

Ahh, but this isn't any time to be thinking things like that
Pettiness was strong enough back in those ancient days
Just for being so darned pretty, I owe her a tip of my hat
She never owed anyone anything except her decent ways....

Twenty of us guys are here.  I was always the odd man out
I never understood how to go about fitting in with the crowd
Joining clubs or bands or teams, what was that all about?
I always figured it to be a way to make oneself feel proud....

So here's to the gentlemen and the ladies of my old school
Even though I attended, no one even noticed I was there
But if I drew attention to myself I would only play the fool
Let those to whom it mattered have the spotlight, I think that's fair.....
