Poetry For Everyday People

We Need Change Now

Up all night
worrying 'bout bills,
ten days behind on
our mortgage, everything
is due, car break lights
aren't coming on, replaced
the bulbs still not working,
so I turn the parking lights
on when I push the brakes
for the cars behind me and
the cops,

having to use
a screwdriver to
get the car in gear?
can't get it fixed now,

buying ground turkey
to make burgers, to
make soup, to make chili,
to make meatloaf, big
jug of wine for eight
bucks,

staying up all night
worrying about bills,

we work hard, gave
our family thousands
and thousands of dollars
this year to help them,
now we sit at the mercy
of a banking system that
will not loan,

in an economy created
by greed rather than
enhanced by wisdom and
the respect and care
for the country
as a whole,

negative in the bank,
need gas for the car,
six hundred dollars
for our son's broken
front tooth from PE
class at school,

my wife needs some products,
I need razors, needed a pair
of jeans for a year now,

we'll work hard all day,
try to close one deal,
instead of five or six,
the banks will do everything
they can to deny the loan?

our home is a hundred thousand
dollars less than it was
a year ago, because our next
door neighbors were foreclosed on?

it's been coming for eight years,

here it is.
