 Slowly Slipping

Swirling around inside my head a maelstrom building fast
Gathering every thought I ever had from first down to the last
Whatever future was ahead of me is now far in the past
Every friend I ever knew is gone, every member of the cast....

I had a cogent thought once, now all is muddled in my head
I had memories stored away, now the empty spots have spread
No point in trying to revive them, there's no waking of the dead
But I go not gently into the night as a famous poet once said....

I have less and less chess pieces now upon the playing field
I lost the king back in the days when all the pawns were killed
One lone knight now is all that's left and he isn't very skilled
I found a few lost memories today, but I am less than thrilled....

Slowly they drift away from me like leaves falling from a tree
I no longer am myself or even close to what I used to be
Neighbors each day, they point this out a little too callously
But nothing can ever last forever, much less the likes of me....

If you once knew or now know me, please speak before too late
The long and winding trail has almost reached the final gate
I was once so very busy, now not much is left upon my plate
Now I await my ride to the other side where angels congregate.....
