 Descent Into Darkness

Slowly all color is melting away
Darkness draining last light's array
Daylight breezes have ceased interplay
Wrapped tightly in silence's embrace....

Of sunlight the flowers all drank their fill
Now closing their petals on side of the hill
Trilling his last note, the whippoorwill
Settles down in his favorite nesting place....

Soft envelope of night now descends
Creating surrealistic patterns and blends
Its blanket reaches out and contends
For the best possible spreading space....

Resident interlocutor of the velvet dark
Taking over for daylight's meadowlark
The owl on the branch, silhouette stark
Suddenly swoops down in elegant grace....

Night in the country a tenebrous scene
Owl keeping watch with eyesight keen
And high above is the lovely Selene
As daylight disappears without a trace....
