 Somewhere In France - 1916

How many letters must I write today?
Only the one Sir,
The Sergeant says.
Dear Madam I regret to inform you,
That your son was killed in action.
The words that will break his Mother's heart,
Written in pencil,
They will tear her apart.
It will ease your great sorrow,
To know that he suffered no pain,
He was killed instantly.
The lie written again.
While his Mother waits,
For her boy,
To come back home.
Somewhere in France,
They shovelled the remains of her son,
Into a sack.
