 Turning Our Heads

Social injustice, racial hatred, genocide, wars, terrorism;
Hunger, abuse of children, slavery, religious intolerance.
Slip in a good movie into the cd player and drift into fantasy;
Hiding from the stark naked reality of this cruel world.
Unable to look upon the pain and agony suffered by humanity;
We simply escape from the vision before us by turning our heads.

We ask logicality, ‘What can I do? I'm only one person.'
We wonder aloud to no one in particular while looking away.
Feeling overwhelmed by the magnitude of the suffering of others,
Our hearts hurt, our eyes recoil, our souls mourn within us.
Or  with calloused hearts we can glare into the issues without concern;
Dead to our connection with all of humanity, thinking, ‘I don't care.'

I would rather be one who has to turn away from the pain,
Than the one who can stare into the face of reality without love.
Better than either choice is the one who can see and hurt within,
And reach within their own resources to do something about it.
One person at a time, without the grand hope of healing the world,
Only doing something out of love, anything, not turning our heads.
