 Price of my Soul

Drawn deeper into the desire for security,
My personal peace is sold for eight pieces of gold.
The rat race of this world's industrial workplace
Is motivated by greed and selfishness of the CEO's.
This is trickled down through management to the workers,
What is the price of my soul?

I bought into the market and the economic packages,
Health care insurance, pension, 401's, wages.
Issues in my mind today as security  is shaky,
The soaring inflation brings fears of impermanence.
I am seeing the gradual aging of America,
What is the price of my soul?

My family life is shortchanged by the long hours,
Weekends and holidays separated from those I love.
Punishing my body shift working for a few dollars more,
Disregarding  the natural rhythms of our mother earth's cycles.
Without true joy in my labor, escape from the moment is my option,
What is the price of my soul?

Making others richer and myself more entangled,
As my debt imprisons me as I chase the American dream.
I need this or that to make my life more satisfying.
The vacuum within the heart of the industrialized workplace
Sucks the life out of my soul each time I enter the turnstile.
What is the price of my soul?

Fantasy dances within my soul as I dream of escape.
I have broken the last chain that binds me… I am now free from debt!
So why do I continue to enter the gate for another lifeless day?
I am broken by fear of the lack of security,
Yet there is no security, it is only an illusion.
What is the price of my soul?

Who could have guessed the economic fall since this poem was written?
