 In This Darkness
Flicking on the kitchen light at night,
Watching the cockroaches run for darkness.
I think of the dark alleyways in our towns;
The demons of drugs and prostitution grip.
Hiding beneath the underbelly of our society,
Scurrying like bugs at the day's first light.
In this darkness they believe they can't be seen.
In this darkness their deeds will forever be hidden.
In this darkness is the veil of illusion complete.
In this darkness those whose hope was stolen exist.
Flicking on the light I see them scurry,
Their cloak of protection is ripped asunder.
The deeds that should not be happening;
Needles in the arms of the weary and the forsaken.
The dying stay hidden throughout the night,
Their humanity fading with each breath.
In this darkness they hide their addictions.
In this darkness they live a life of death.
In this darkness dimming the light of their spirit.
In this darkness death visits another soul.
