 Prison of my Making

I have received a life's sentence from the universal judge.
I've been locked into this prison without the chance of parole.
I wonder where did I go wrong in the pathway of my life?
What was the cause  of my incarceration into this hellhole?
The powers that be drive me into the place of hiding,
I look for the reason of this prison of my making.

Life now can run its course without my participation.
I am truly out of the loop now and a part of me loves it.
The isolation is a protection from having to truly live.
I am such a fool as I opened the door myself to my cell,
Then I slammed it shut with a sense of finality, I am doomed.
I see that I myself am the reason of this prison of my making.

I truly feared life and the efforts demanded  for those many years.
I began to build this stronghold  in my teenage years in preparation.
This secure cage is constructed of fantasy as reality is not honored.
Then entered the drugs, the drink, the fear, the dreaming.
I enabled myself to hide away in this cell as my life passed by.
I spent so many years trembling in this prison of my making.

Now after 42 years of incarceration in this cubical that I entered,
I finally begin to regret the first lockdown I allowed at age thirteen.
This is all an elaborate illusion of my fantasy world I begin to see.
The door to my cell is wide open,  but I cower in the corner.
I don't want this game to end, I don't want to come into the mornings light.
I have been given a second chance  from my prison of my making.

I cautiously step out of this dark and dank room into the warm sunshine.
I feel a smile come across my face as I look up into the sun above.
I take another step and look back to see the evaporation of the cell;
It is engulfed in a puff of smoke like in a magicians show, then it's gone!
I stand happily in the light butt naked, as life invites me to explore;
After all these long years, I am finally free from the prison of my making.
