 Under the Walnut Tree

It was the Spring of 1985, days passing without distinction;
Wasting away too many of the moments of my life.
I was off work and mowing the grass, high on pot again.
Sweat dripping off my nose on a hot May afternoon,
Sitting on the riding mower enjoying the light buzz
Allowing my thoughts to slow down, finding the calm.
Next the push mower to finish the job around the trees,
passing under my favorite walnut tree, I heard something!
The words tingled my entire body like hitting my crazy bone!
I heard these words, in a deep masculine voice,  "Fred, it is time."
Instantly stopping the mower and looking all around me,
Not wondering really who spoke these words, I knew who.
Running into the house, up the stairs to a storage closet,
Digging out an unopened Living Bible given to me by Dad
On my 23rd birthday over ten years ago.
Opening the pages to the Book of John the third chapter
I prayed, and tearfully began reading the Word of God.
Two days later, I went to church for the first time since my wedding.
I was now saved by grace;  a child of  the Most High God!
Later after the church service, I walked out into the back yard
And sit down with my back against the old trunk,
I'm at peace under the walnut tree.
