It was the fifties--1954
I was a kid a sophomore a little skinny
We in the fifties mighty poor
Mom worked at Sears store
Our payments stalled in arrears
X-mas present I got a winter coat
Not expensive that I might gloat
Cloth, black with white stripe on shoulder
Letterman type made me look older
My friend, sick, halftime we walked to the car
In the shadows of the game we didn't get far
Car pulled up along side with punks inside
Outnumbered no where for two of us to hide
"Take off your coat its the Dukes wear with pride"
"Really!--You take it off--lot of you have tried."
We were outnumbered in this dispute
I hit the driver flush on the jaw
Sick, my friend Closed his side with a giant paw
Today all the Dukes would carry a gun
Even strong a gun,s bullet you cannot from run
This comes from a true story. Memories of the fifties.
Sure we had a fight but fighting was fair. The Dukes
were punks. Gang wannabees, there were six of them.
Today it would not be a fair fight. The, "Dukes" were
known to intimate kids who wore their jacket. My
friend was very loyal he could have run. I could not run.
Mom bought my jacket saving pennies from her wages. My
friend did not leave me. That made him braver than me.
He stood on the other side. I think of things going on
today and I wonder what happened to pride. What did happen
was the Dukes didn't come to my school anymore. The driver
went home with a broken nose. Had to report to mom. Different
generation, Mom son in toll came to my mother and apologized
for the conduct of her son and his friends. The Dudes were
disbanded. Where are the parents today of these gang members?
