  In The Forties

Turn to the sky when the fields are burned dry
Up there somewhere is help when we bleed
Up there is the place where raindrops fly
And someone hears our every single need....

Crops are almost gone, all is dry as a bone
Future seems unsteady and harvest is bleak
But we do not fight this battle all alone
There is help to be found if only we seek....

When the Patterson's baby slipped down the well
And we could faintly hear his plaintive cries
First thing we did was ring the old church bell
Asking for a miracle, His love never dies....

The baby was saved after three long days
We did the work and God did the healing
Everyone heaved a sigh and sang His praise
And it was such a wonderful feeling....

One day muffled thunder, then blessed rain
There would be food enough this year after all
Next year will begin the cycle of life again
But if trouble arises, we know who to call....
