ONWARD TO WAR
Mother's think the worst
When their baby is Army joining
The tears of her eyes burst
She's thinking, writing, phoning
There was the pleading note
Couldn't find your car
The one that night I wrote
Because I thought it was too far
Across oceans you may go
To Germany, Afghanistan
Your future I will not know
Just a mom, not a man
This mom fights her own battles
She raise you best she could
If your cage she rattles
She only wants to see the good
When you were young
Silky blond hair flowing
Giggling brown-eyed fun
My baby boy growing
Not telling me his next four years
He could be far away
I think of war and tears
Run down my face to this heart that will pray
Every moment
Every second you're gone
Through every storm it
Will rage on
Onward to war
When will the fighting stop
Downward to the core
Then blown out the top
Take a mother's love young man
Listen to her poetry
She knows better now your plan
From others who set it free
Your friend, your wife
Told me more than you did
Contemporaries in your life
Twenty-seven now, my kid
In my thoughts, there is love
In my soul, there is strength
In my eyes, light from above
In my heart, many times I've thanked
God for you
Your height, your eyes
I was true
To both you guys
Having to be mom and dad
Mostly alone, paid all the bills
Did the best with what I had
Told you the truth about the thrills
Onward to war if you go there
Watch your back, get stronger
As a soldier, you show no fear
For your life to last longer
In some other land
With strangers set to attack
Work with you team, be manned
In fours years you make it back
Alive and not broken
Walking tall and older
Chose the army as you've spoken
Grew to four years older
Just as if you'd stayed
A half a decade will go by
Boy kid, just as if you played
Boy Army-man where no one really died.
