I take Sweep for a walk everyday
Or he takes me would be correct to say,
He is only small but he is strong
That`s why I have one arm short and one long.
On to his collar I then hook his lead
It`s about 3` long just what I need,
It`s not leather it`s made of chain,
This is so it can take the strain.

Everything was fine until one day
My kids bought a new lead much to my dismay,
They said it would extend and also retract
Said Sweep could go ahead of me in fact.

Said I wasn`t fussy on this idea
As I like to keep Sweep pretty near,
`Just press the button and the lead will lock`
Of all they were telling me I took stock.

Next day we just stepped outside the door
And a cat he spotted that`s for sure,
He took off like a bat out of hell
`Oh no! Sweep, stop, come back` I did yell.
But all my plea`s he chose to ignore
He could think of the cat and nothing more,
I pressed the button for the lead to lock
But I was in for a nasty shock.
The lead extended to its full extent
But the strain was too much and the hook just bent,
Sweeps` new found freedom he thought was grand
But I was left with just a lead in my hand.
I stood where I was and watched this chase
This dog of mine is sure a head-case,
It all ended just 100` away
And that cat lived to fight another day.

The cat had run right up a tree
So it could escape and be free,
Now Sweep in his wisdom decided to follow
Then couldn`t get down much to his sorrow.

Now I had to go and rescue Sweep
`Cause from this height he would not leap,
He was stuck in the branch where the bow had split
He did look quite funny I had to admit.

So I lifted him down and carried him back
And clipped on his chain where there was no slack,
Into the bin went that new stupid lead
Wasn`t a good idea we were all agreed.
