Six Tanka on Falconry

Early colors fade
Hard bright light upon the snow
Blinded bird of prey
Held upon  a glove clad arm
Expectant talons flexing

Lustrous feathers
Azure eyes of cutting sight
Erect pose…watchful
Up thrust wings…anklet holds firm
Impatient claws grasp leather

Unchained glorious
Temporary  sovereignty
Lifts to seek her dove
Slow ascension gaining height
Careful circular  searching

Screeching cry far off
Circles turn upon themselves
Falcon's spiral dance
Towards the earth she plummets
Claws open… eyes needle sharp

Winsome prize pale grey
Tumbling through the whispery clouds
There she spies her dove
Reaches out with hungry claws
Captured now in one fell dive

Piercing whistle shrills
Upward again so swiftly
Obedient bird
Hears her master call her back
To his hand and hood she flies
