 Poems by The Old Cowboy

Down Yonder Lane

Duty calls from across the sea
Take my hand say you will marry me

Then its goodbye my love for I must go
Oh please sweetheart do not grieve so

Accept this small circle of gold
A bond to wear as we grow old

On your finger closest to your heart
Think of me often while we are apart

Wait and watch down yonder lane
For soon I shall return again

Off in that Asian land I fight
Longing to hold you near every night

Kneeling in silent prayer alone
Hoping to return to you back home

I shall come when Autumns leaves are gone
Down yonder lane whistling a song

The winter snows may cover the ground
It will not keep me from being homeward bound

And so my time in war and loneliness have past
To your waiting arms I travel at last

With God's grace I survived that war
Returning now to you and leaving no more

Now with you I shall always remain
Strolling arm and arm down yonder lane
