Poetry For Everyday People

Unless I See You First

I get these panic attacks,
they come as fast as a bullet man,
had them since I was a little boy,
you'd think I would expect them?
and I do in a way,

but they change, enough,
to through me off, the mind
is always developing new
attack strategy's,

life is about the little things,
and sometimes you accumulate
enough stress, bad vibes,
cruelty, war, death, deceit,
economy, injustice,
and if you care:
it'll get you,

drinking alcohol is normal
for people who suffer from
anxiety or panic attacks,
it's a science for me,

at times is as a surfer
riding a wave,
or a lead guitarist
riding a rhythm,

no,
let me take that back,
it's more like staying
ahead of something bad,
not running, there is no
running from yourself,
but you learn it's all mind,
and minds can easily be altered,

now please don't get too lost
in the word altered, this isn't
about how much you can party,
it's just me, in the middle of
the battle, winning,
and sharing with you,

my mind was hitting me hard
with a full attack, it's been
doing it for days, and I've survived
it as usual, it's five p.m. and it
started knocking on my brain's door,

and I decided to kick it in the ass
before it kicked me,
red wine baby,

see at times, I would just
pace, go crazy out of my mind
all night, think I was dying,
heart attack, brain explosion,
but that never happens, it's
the last cruelest trick, your
mind f u
cking you,

I know all the breathing methods,
they work, chamomile is wonderful,
meditation, I work out, candles,
nature, fountains, love, family,
Dr. Weil's stress formula is magic,
you have something long enough, you try
everything, if you're a fighter or one
whose not much on
uncontrolled self abuse,
when control is your preferred style,

good old fashion one on one suffering,
almost as if playing chicken, two cars
coming at each other
(my mind and I),

I am a step ahead of it tonight,
three, four drinks in, it's behind me,
and I turn and laugh at it, it no longer
owns me, I beat it, many different ways,
tonight it's just drinking it away,

see you next time sucker.
