 Contemporary poetry by Dan Donlan

THE WAITING ROOM

The room was full today. A loud voice amongst the soft silence.
The displeasure given that personal objects taken away at the
entrance. But anger and protesting was softly silenced. Lots of
bad things were going on in the world this day. A new terrorist
bombing, killing in Africa, not to mention Israel tired of constantly
being bombed had crossed the border and were bombing. So many
Cancer patients dying, so many heart attacks, flooding, a car
wreck, a gunman gone mad shooting his wife and children. Those
would not be seen in the waiting room today. They would go the
direct route. Would not be gathering in the waiting room. now and
then there was an exception. There was no separation by color, race,
religion or creed in the waiting room. All were just people of
faith. All children of God.

"Excuse me---Head Angel, I believe I am first in line. Why are you
taking this man before me? He is not Jewish, he is not chosen. Why
he is a---?" A hand softly raised, "Hush young man. You will be seen
in order of the list." And then even a louder shout, all understood
because in the waiting room all speak in the same tongue, "You infidel,
unworthy of life. I am the chosen one by Allah. I demand where are
my seventy virgins? I have prayed to Allah forty times a day."
And, "You will get your turn Omar! In the order Allah asks."

"Now young man, you and the children step forward. The Gods of all
true believers will see you. You who set aside religious beliefs
and dived on the bomb to try and save these Muslim children. The
Gods will see you now." and the young Marine holding two Muslim children
in his arms crossed himself and followed, Those of you invited for
reincarnation can choose a line. Those who wish to be returned to earth
as dogs, cats, frogs, stand in this line. Those who do not wish to take
these steps towards redemption. Who believe in false God's may try for
redemption remembering the thou shalt not covet---!. Those who wish not
to Make this trip can wait ten minutes for the elevator down. A man
in a red suit with pitchfork will be waiting for you in hell."
