 Mountain

I have arrived after years of straining,
I have climbed with very little training.
A mistake or two I've made along the way,
But it didn't stop me from arriving this day.

I look down and around to the valley below,
I see the effort and the pain that I know.
Yet once reaching the apex of my life's dream,
My thoughts are on the journey, it would seem.

Victory has come from the battles up the slopes;
From the  many struggles, as I learned the ropes.
If I had found some shortcut to the mountain's top,
I would be poorer within my soul, where would it stop?

For my wisdom and my peace comes not from this place,
It came from the journey to arrive, it came from the race.
Gentle waves of comfort wrap my soul with true peace,
I can smile and sit down to rest, my wanderings do cease.

This is the goal of every sojourning human's heart,
At the summit of the mountain, now I realize I must depart.
For  from this perspective, the distant haze is now clear,
Another mountain reaching higher; it is drawing me near.
