 Two Dogs

by Fred Pifer.

There are two dogs dwelling within me that are fighting each other for control.
One Dog is the bad dog with all the pleasures and pains of living in the flesh.
The other dog is the good dog carrying the light that it brings to my soul.
You might wonder which of these two dogs has the upper paw;
In control is the one that I feed.

It is me that makes one dog stronger and enables it to be the lead dog.
I may not even be totally aware of where my attention is from moment to moment,
As I sometimes live in a state of disconnection with the power of focus.
Tossed and turned by the whims of the two dogs warring for the upper paw,
In control is the one that I feed.

As I become more awake, living with attention on my intentions, I can now see
That the two dogs war is actually maintained by my own lack of steadiness.
The cease fire can be called at any moment, as I turn my attention to one dog.
I give the leash by the habits of my mind and the intentions of my actions,
In control is the one that I feed.
