3RD POEM WRITTEN BEFORE LACEY'S DEATH

SOUNDTRACK

I USED TO PUT MY HEADPHONES ON MY STOMACH
AND PLAY TAICHOVSKY, BEETHOVEN, & TOSCANINI
FOR YOU BEFORE YOU WERE BORN
I HEARD CLASSICAL MUSIC
MADE BABIES MORE INTELLIGENT
I WONDER WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE SOUND?
YOU SANG ALONG WITH BARNEY
WHEN YOU WERE A LITTLE BOY
OR WAS THE WWF THEME SONG YOUR FAVORITE
YOU WERE A WRESTLING FANATIC
MAYBE IT WAS KANYE WEST
YOUR FAVORITE RAPPER
YOU ALWAYS SAID YOU LOVED GROWING UP IN
NEW YORK CITY
I THINK OF ALL THE EVERYDAY SOUNDS YOU HEARD
THE SUBWAY, THE BUSES, CARS HONKING
THE BEEP, BEEP, BEEP OF TRUCKS BACKING UP
SIRENS, AMBULANCE POLICE CARS ALL THE EVERYDAY SOUNDS OF NYC

....AND THERE WAS THAT LAST SOUND
I WISH YOU NEVER HEARD
THE SOUND OF THE METRONORTH TRAIN
PULLING INTO THE PORT CHESTER STATION

GROWING UP THERE WERE THE TIMES
YOU HEARD THE SOUNDS OF GROWN-UPS ARGUING
ANOTHER SOUND I WISH YOU NEVER HEARD

MAYBE YOUR FAVORITE SOUND WAS YOUR NAME BEING CALLED
ON YOUR COLLEGE GRADUATION
I KNOW YOU WERE SO PROUD THAT DAY
MAYBE IT WAS YOUR MOMMY WHISPERING
"I LOVE YOU"
WHILE YOU WERE FALLING ASLEEP
OR WHEN I SAID "GOOD MORNING LITTLE CHEERIOS"
TO YOU AND YOUR SISTER IN THE MORNINGS
ON THE LAST DAY I SAW YOU
THE LAST THING I SAID TO YOU WAS
"I LOVE YOU SWEET SWEET BABY"
DID YOU LIKE HOW I ALWAYS CALLED YOU THAT?
WHEN I THINK OF THE SOUNDTRACKS FROM YOUR LIFE
THE THINGS YOU LIKED AND THOSE YOU LOVED
ALL THESE SOUNDS BECOME MORE SPECIAL TO ME

....ALL EXCEPT FOR THAT LAST SOUND
I WISH YOU NEVER HEARD
THE SOUND OF THE METRONORTH TRAIN
PULLING INTO THE PORT CHESTER STATION
THE LAST SOUND YOU HEARD

DARK SPAIN 2009
