  October's Child

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

TO HAVE AND TO HOLD

Seems a thousand years ago since the parades
Of sunny salutations really mattered
Long ago yesterdays became today's charades
Reality played the cards with emotions scattered

We stood inside shadows of our own moonlight
Tiptoeing within a silence long since begun
Dreams poured from pillows in the late night
Into empty reels too worn for the rerun

We sat on the sofa, jaded copies of a book
Torn echoes from our wedding pages
We gazed into a fireplace with an injured look
Eons of memories drifted in stages

Love, faint and cold like falling snow,
No longer swirls in tender perfections
We danced in summer's eve, long ago
Now tears of winter trace misty reflections
