Above the wire high in the dark sky…
it floats, dances, and sways slowly back an
forth on its tiny parachute.
Lighting up the area for only a few fleeting
moments, with its yellowish flickering light.

Silhouetting the moving shadowed figures
on the jungle floor, all darting in and out of
the elephant grass, trying to keep out of sight.
Then the thunder of a howitzer breaks
the silence of the moon-less night.

At the perimeters edge, near the wire,
kneels a lonely sentinel, his weapon at ready.
His eyes squint as he peers up at the swaying
pop flare.

He prays to spot Charlie, before the tiny
candle light loses its life saving glow.
