Summer Daze

We tumbled by the churchyard
In the hot summer light
Behind a Hawthorne hedge
Safely out of sight

A jumble of youthful bodies
Flailing limbs in the sun
Neither knowing what we were doing
Over almost before it had begun
Amongst the Buttercups and Daisies
The birds and butterflies
And a skylark in full song
As it climbed the open skies

And we sat and tried to laugh
Neither knowing what to say
Neither knowing where to look
That strange summer's day
So we decided nothing happened
Brought that day to an end
And still after so many years
She's a greatly valued friend

We are so at ease together
And we've both kept the pledge
Never to mention to any others
About our time behind that hedge
