 I Want a Job
The economic downturn continues with no end in sight;
Layoffs are much to common of a good workers plight.
The dream of a solid career is blown far from my mind,
As I search high and low for anything that I can find.
I want a job.
The idea of dignity has been shot down over troubled waters;
I simply need to provide for my sons and my daughters.
Applying for a fry cook job at minimum wage is where I am;
Only a few months ago working for $25 an hour… oh man!
I want a job.
Our government is attempting to minimize this condition,
Referring to other recent recessions, saying we're in transition.
I shake my head, remembering the stories my grandfather told;
As I wade in the quicksand, awaiting the fullness to unfold.
I want a job.
Mr. Obama speaks words of hope, I am trying to hold on;
I am being patient for America's brand new sparking dawn.
In the meanwhile, I'm interviewing for a job at Mickey D's,
As all our jobs are being worked by those speaking Chinese.
I just want a job.
