Poetry For Everyday People

John Mayer

Man, I would dig the cat
if he would just
stop acting like he's
an innovator,

he's on stage with BB king,
Buddy Guy and Keith Urban,
playing lead like he's at a bar
cutting contest?  brother, John,
you're playing Buddy's notes,
you're playing BB's notes,
do what Keith was doing, respect,
sit back and tell your kids about it,

you're mostly playing SRV's notes
any way, we hear it man,
not so much Jimi, mostly SRV,
which is awesome,
means you're playing Freddie King,
Albert King, Jingo Reinhart, Grant Green,
T Bone, BB, Buddy, you know the list,
the map, the history,

know what I'm saying?

when Stevie was on stage with
Buddy and BB, he played rhythm,
until they looked at him and
said go for it,

you remind me of the story
when Stevie and George Thorogood
were doing a tribute to Chuck Berry
with Chuck, and George was so Loud
you couldn't hear Chuck play,
Stevie went off on him for his disrespect,

listen young blood, I am glad
that you are a great student,
we need the music out there,
but when you're on stage with
BB king, Buddy Guy (and I bet you
I met Buddy and seen Buddy
way before you ever did)
nobody there wants to hear
you play, sorry,
we wanna hear Buddy and BB,

be happy,
be honored,

you dig?
