 RC Cola and a Moon Pie

During my childhood, a grocery store at the top of the street held my attention.
Walking up the block and across Alleghany Avenue to Folks' Grocery;
Clyde and Butch ran this little store, full of goodies that any child would love.
A long counter of penny candy to choose from; jaw breakers, Mint Juleps, Mary Jane's;
Candy bars lined up beside them; Milk Shakes, Zero's, Mallow Cups, and Milky Ways.
Then was the snack cakes; mmm… the snack cakes; Banana Flips, cup cakes, Moon pie's.
Along the front wall was the soda cooler, full of icy water, freezing my hand as I decide;
Grapette, Brownie, little bottles of Coke, then the largest bottle of all sodas, RC Cola.
RC Cola and a Moon pie was only fifteen cents back then, a snack fit for a kid.

Pixie Stix, Marlboro candy cigarettes, bubblegum cigars, delicious chocolate cigarettes,
Necco's, M&M's, Fritos Corn Chips, Tom's Potato Chips, Ludens Cherry Cough Drops;
My dreams were filled with a little sack full of Folk's Groceries riches.
Summertime campouts were highlighted by these sugary treats from Folks' Grocery.
The Presidents under the caps of RC Colas lids, colleted for a prize turned in at the distributor.
Mallow Cup coins sent in for free Mallow Cups by the mail, waiting impatiently for my candy grams.
Tap, Mark, Kim, and I would walk that sidewalk from our house up to the Store several times a day,
As all my money ended up in that beautiful antique cash register on the end of the counter.
RC Cola and a Moon pie was only fifteen cents back then, a snack fit for a kid.

I vividly remember the stores layout as this was a place of fantasy and dreams.
Sugar filled my veins after a walk up to the Store, energy surged through my body.
Sharing with the other kids was not part of the plan as we each greedily guarded our stash.
Occasionally a good marble could be bought at the Store from the large jar of assorted glass;
I would always look for a special one or for any bumble bees, the brown and yellow beauties.
Only a penny each, but sometimes I was torn between a piece of candy or a pretty marble.
When the Virginia sales tax began back in the day, as I remember the agony of a penny wasted.
So many times  only fourteen cents would be spent, so as not to give that penny away to the state.
RC Cola and a Moon pie was only fifteen cents back then, now plus a penny tax.
