CHILD HEADED HOUSEHOLDS - I

Emmanuel's mother was frequently ill
He had a vague notion this disease would kill
His father for some time had already been dead
Leaving behind him and his older brother Fred
And now even his mother was wasting away
Her persistent cough worsened day by day

The boys tried their very best to save their mother
Fred borrowed a bicycle from a village neighbour
He pushed her on the bicycle all along the way
The journey to the clinic was half a day
After a month, he was told to take her back
They gave him careful instructions and a medicine pack

They boys struggled to stay in school
They gathered all resources they could pool
The boys took every care to prevent infection
But their mother finally succumbed to the affliction
Using a white cloth, they closed her mouth and tied her jaw
Left behind, their hopes were wounded, emotions left raw
In a banana grove, they covered her with earth and stones
Laid to rest, she would soon turn to dust and bones
