Black Dog - I

The trucker peered into the distance ahead
It had been a while since he had slept in a bed
Never to drink while driving was his stringent code
He kept his eyes unwaveringly on the illuminated road
The night sky stretched ahead of him, black and dark
The road bathed by the headlights, white and stark

Always cautious, he was on the guard
But he knew he had been pushing much too hard
These days, economic conditions were being unkind
The idea of bonus payments came again in his mind
He yawned and ran a palm over his wrinkled face
As the giant truck sped ahead at a brisk pace
He lit yet another cigarette and puffed away
After the delivery he would collect his due pay
And then what he wanted was a shower and sleep
No dreams only slumber, merciful and deep

In the distance, he saw something by the roadside
As the truck approached, his eyes went wide
It was a rather large, shaggy, black hound
Suddenly it rose and disappeared with a bound
As the trucker passed by he looked out of his side
He shook his head as he continued the remaining ride
His glance then went to the picture on the dashboard
It was of his daughter who he absolutely adored
As he recalled the good news she had said
On his lips, a warm, content smile spread

Some time elapsed before it happened once more
He saw the huge, black hound he had seen before
But this time it dashed straight across the road
The trucker fought hard to control his mammoth load
He slammed the brakes and struggled with the wheel
The truck finally came to a halt with a groaning squeal
On the other side, the dog held him with its eyes
They were red and luminous, seemed to hypnotize
It glowered from beyond the reach of the light
Before once again disappearing into the night
