A ROBIN NAMED JOEY

ONE DAY WHILE IN THE BACK YARD,
 A ROBIN CAME TO ME
HE DIDN'T SEEM TO BE AFRAID,
JUST BRAVE AS HE COULD BE.

HE HOPPED FROM OFF THE FENCE RAIL
 AND LANDED ON MY SHOULDER.
HE REALLY TOOK ME BY SURPRISE
I NEVER SAW ONE BOLDER.

I GUESS HE'D BEEN AN ORPHAN
TAKEN IN BY SOMEONE KIND.
WHO  HAND RAISED HIM FROM A BABY
'TIL A HOME HE SOON WOULD FIND.

THEY MUST OF HAD HIM QUITE SOME TIME,
 AND FINALLY SET HIM FREE
TO LOOK FOR OTHER BIRDS LIKE HIM
NESTING IN THE NEAR BY TREE.

I DIDN'T KNOW JUST WHAT TO DO,
DO I KEEP HIM SAFE OR LET HIM GO?
I DECIDED TO KEEP HIM IN A CAGE
AND THEN WE NAMED HIM JOE.

WE FEED HIM WORMS AND BUGS AND SEEDS.
HE STAYED WITH US QUITE A WHILE
WHEN I THINK OF HIM TO THIS VERY DAY
 IT ALWAYS MAKES ME SMILE.

THERE WAS AN AVIARY AT A LOCAL MALL
WHERE THEY HAD BIRDS OF ALL KINDS.
WE THOUGHT HE MIGHT BE HAPPY THERE,
AND WE'D VISIT FROM  TIME TO TIME.

HE ALWAYS HOPPED ALONG THE CAGE
WHEN EVER WE'D COME TO SEE
WE LOVED HIM SO - HE SEEMED TO KNOW.
YET WE WISHED HE COULD BE FREE,

LAST TIME WE WENT TO VISIT HIM
HE WAS NO WHERE IN SIGHT.
THE MAN WHO TOOK CARE OF THE BIRDS,
SAID JOEY HAD DIED ONE NIGHT.

I OFTEN GRIEVED WITH IN MY HEART
DID HE DIE CAUSE HE FELT DESERTED?
IF WE HAD KEPT HIM WITH US
WOULD HIS UNTIMELY END BEEN AVERTED?
