the blue inbetween

they crouched perfectly still
she held his hand
remembered the handshake in the street
and the gift he had given her

the first thing you realise
when faced with this kind of situation
is that time doesn't slow down
when you're afraid
no matter what anyone else tells you
it doesn't stop
it has no significance
unless you want to count the seconds
before whatever terrible is about to happen

it's strange now to think
that I had a world back then
and if I could
I would have explored this world
before someone took you away from me
I can't remember how many times
we had made that walk
we had made love
nothing much changed after that
but it shaped my life for years to come

the clouds hung heavy in the sky that day
the sun had been disappearing rapidly
but it was still early enough
for the light to hold
and the last thing that I remember
were tiny snowflakes
beginning to fall
in the blue inbetween
