 reflections

when the story ends

when the trees finally stop growing
that's when the story ends
or when the last hint of blue
has disappeared out of the sky
or the next baby born
decides not to cry
when the hands of the clock
tick but don't tock
that's when the story ends

when the night sky finally loses it's shine
that's when the story ends
or when the last hair turns grey
on the the last old man's head
or the animal in hibernation
stays in its bed
with the last shriek of joy
of each girl and boy
that's when the story ends

when all of the rivers finally stop flowing
that's when the story ends
or when the last people on earth
become the last of our kind
or the child without knowing
gets left behind
when we're leaving this place
because we've ran out of space
that's when the story ends

when the world finally stops turning
that's when the story ends
or when the last living plant
sheds it's last leaves
or the air becomes still
without so much as a breeze
when all's said and done
and we stop having fun
that's when the story ends
