BABA YAGA & THE 21ST CENTURY WOMAN
It was in a fairy tale where she first confronted me
For young kids, she is quite a scary character to be
Baba Yaga was portrayed to be a very ugly old hag
Her scrawny arms and legs sticking out of her rag
She lives in a tiny hut guarded by a fence of human bones
Grissly abode rotates on a chicken leg accompanied by moans
Visitors must humbly request the hut ‘show them the front'
It screeches to a halt, opens the door with a sighing grunt
Windows keep close watch and the hut itself is a small size
Illumination is taken care of by the skulls with blazing eyes
Also featured are three horse riders usually in full flight
They are the Bright Dawn, Red Sun and the Dark Midnight
Among helpers she sometimes uses bodiless hands
At other times some pets fulfill her impossible demands
She leaves early morning and returns at the end of the day
Howling spirits and ghouls accompanying her all the way
Flying in a mortar and sweeping her tracks by a broom
Her arrival envelops everything in a cloud of gloom
Ancient gnarled trees groan and the wind begins to wail
At this point, young readers' courage to go on may fail!
Baba Yaga has iron teeth and a long crooked nose
How old is she? I would say no one really knows
Quite often an antagonist, she has also played a good part
As to pretty little orphaned Vasilissa with pure, good heart
She was sent to the forest by her wicked step mother
To get a burning light, an errand like no other
She took along her late mother's magic doll
Finally at Baba Yaga's hut, she gave a demure call
The revolving hut slowed as Baba Yaga was back on her way
Vasilissa was too horrified and scared to run away
Baba Yaga ordered her to fulfill some tasks or be killed
Vasilissa took help of her doll which was magically skilled
All she had to do, was feed the magic doll and ask
Together, they completed every mind boggling task
The omniscient witch did not need to be explicit
She gave Vasilissa a blazing skull at the end of the visit
With this light, she went home and in a quick flash
The step mother and wicked daughters were reduced to ash
It is often assumed Vasilissa's cruel death was certainly fated
On the contrary, she returned empowered and finally liberated!
And thus we begin to realize the nature of this witch
She is cruel and will kill without the slightest hitch
But she is powerless over those with a good, kind soul
She maybe wild and untamed, but fair on the whole
Sometimes she will help, sometimes she will advise
She has resourceful gifts and is definitely wise
She is old, ugly and repulsive which underlines the fact
It is the intention and not good looks that should attract
We all often hear and say that beauty is only skin deep
Good behaviour and kind nature are forever ours to keep
We lie about age; we fret about hair, skin and tooth
Today's world we are always chasing beauty and youth
We all want to be tall, charming, beautiful and fair
Never look in our hearts, what filth we harbour there
The 3 embodiments of women are virgin, mother and the crone
With experience & capability, why is she standing alone?
