Winning

We were in the state tourney
Up against a strong team
But victory was certain
Or so it did seem.

It was in the last inning
They were down to one out
Sweet victory was certain
Yes, there was no doubt.

Though their tie was at third
And the winner on base
We were nonetheless sure
They could not beat our ace.

But then a sharp hit
My friend missed the ball
It bounced off his glove
And then rolled to the wall.

Now I'll never forget
As we walked off the field
How invincible we felt
Till our fate had been sealed.

So here is the lesson
I learned from back then
That life is uncertain
And we don't always win.
