 Journey to the Edge

Christopher Columbus challenged the fates on his journey west,
The seas became more disturbed as the days turned into weeks.
Believing that there was a short cut to India he went on this quest,
Disputing the flat earth theory, to his crew he courageously speaks.

Fear among the crew of sea monsters near the edge of the earth,
As only the new breed of scientist talk of the earth being a sphere.
These sailors were taught that the earth was flat since their birth;
Trembling as each day took them closer to the edge in this new frontier.

Columbus put his faith in science, he thought the world was an orb,
He sailed with courage and conviction, standing strong before the crew.
Columbus could feel the fears of his men, science was too much to absorb;
On this journey to the edge, the Captain would see them through.

‘Land Ho!' Shouts the lookout with disbelieve and gladness in his voice;
His eyes had been peeled for the end of the seas, the edge if you choose.
The crew had been saved from a certain death, they cheer and rejoice.
Victory was won as this journey to the edge became a cross Atlantic cruise.

Note:
In 1828 Washington Irvin wrote ‘The Life and Voyages of
Christopher Columbus'. This propagated the belief that
his crew was a superstitious lot, still believing in the flat
earth. In actuality, this belief had long died off in the early
Middle Ages, but goodness, it makes for a great story.
