As The Sun Goes Down

I address this poem to all Veterans in all the United
States Armed Forces all around the world past present and future.

As the sun goes down in this foreign land
On my rifle I rest my hand

Growing darkness surrounds me
Wondering how near is the enemy

Alone with fear but unafraid
That's the way soldiers are made

Willing to stand for all that's right
Pulling on inter strength for the fight

I think not of death only freedom
It beats my heart like a drum

What price we pay in wars
Returning with many inward scars

Some on the outside showing
Others a hidden pain aching

Like our father's, father's we fought
Like them memories can't be forgot

So I look into the deeping night
Pondering my fate and plight

Wondering if I will survive
Waiting for the next dawn to arrive

Emotions on edge fears fanned
As the sun goes down in this foreign land
