We rode across the river and the first thing we did see
Was a lazy rolling river rolling lazily
We shook our heads and asked the river why it was so lazy
The river just rolled over, seemed to think that we were crazy
We rode across the river and the first thing we did spy
Far above our heads we saw an eagle in the sky
We called to it and asked the eagle what it saw up there
It dipped its wings and flipped its tail and said "Nothing but air"
We rode across the river where the forest hid the trees
We saw a deer was watching from a grove of hickories
We asked it what's for dinner and we asked if we might stay
But it was most discourteous and quickly ran away
We thought we heard some whispering and when we looked down
We saw the many grasses grow for miles all around
We asked them why they whispered and they all answered as one
But any secret so well known could hardly be much fun
We saw a mouse was playing in the grass not far away
We asked it for directions but it had nothing to say
For it was very young and had not travelled very far
Perhaps was one of those who feel we should stay where we are
We rode across the river and we found a grizzly there
We asked him how he was and he said "Hungry as a bear"
We had him stay for dinner and he had us for dessert
And a few days later we were turned into the dirt
And we grew up with the grasses which were eaten by the mouse
Which was taken by the eagle to be eaten at his house
And the eagle died midflight one day and fell into the river
And the river thanked the sky for the gift that he did give her
And the deer drank from the river as the sun set quietly
Answering the question we had asked previously
