 What Is It Really?

Love is such a simple word and it doesn't mean a thing
Going steady, getting engaged and then a wedding ring
All the while inside yourself you know the proper word is lust
But society makes its demands and we do what we must....

Everyone saying "I love you", divorce rate is fifty per cent
Maybe your vows aren't broken but all of them are bent
It is so hard to speak the truth about such things as this
It might be better if a word like love simply did not exist....

And yet ......I really believe something magical can occur
Maybe once in a lifetime between a "him" and a "her"
It just needs a more all-encompassing phrase or word
To me, "beyond all comprehension" sounds less absurd....

But a single word, how can it express a thousand feelings
The kind that addles your brain about a gal and sends it reeling
Love is much too simple a word for countless emotions
For countless adorations, aching hearts and devotions....

Love is such a simple word and it doesn't mean a thing
It is probably more descriptive of a romance or a fling
Of a couple of young teen-age kids deep in infatuation
But love's the most often used word to describe the situation....
