footprints in the earth.....

Nightfire

Coming upon me in a moment
Flames met my eyes
And a smoking drift
I would have wished this earlier
Apprehended by anxiety
What fuel and motive
Brought this nocturnal rite
Yet beautiful and fiery
The burning raged
Leaping ambition into the
Darkened sky
Illuminating a plot of untended blocks
Unfinished
Waiting for the owner,
Unneeded sacrifice
The electric bulbs
Glowed defiant
Unchallenged by this burning intrusion
Acknowledging its limited reign
Its sure destiny in defeated ash
Yet rising
Igniting the mind with a need
A remembrance of an unequalled spirit
Untamed by the darkness
An emotion with a mysterious end
Impulsively I wished this on
That time would burn
And passion return
And lit my soul
With immortality
Yet it would die
Its flicker out
Surrendering finally
To the star filled sky.
