My Friend Annette

Annette drives around a lot.
She works in a shopping mall.
My name is Lisa.
I'm a teacher.  I don't go out much.
We are friends.
We don't see eye to eye on charity.
When asked,
"Miss, can you see your way to helping me to a sandwich?"
She answers: "No.  How dare you?  Who are you
to step in my way asking for money?"
It's fun to listen to Annette about this matter:
"You learn something new everyday.
My son worked hard to become a computer repairman.
I don't want him handing money out.
My daughter is an accountant.
Not for these bums on the street,
begging for money from our pockets.
They stand in shopping plazas, on streets,
in subways, asking for money.
If you give to them,
they come back tomorrow wanting more.
Charity begins at home.
Jesus  is talking about help,
but I have to set my limits."
That last opinion I always thought fascinating.
"My children have chosen who they love,"
Annette says.
"These people can go to a food bank
or get welfare elsewhere."

I don't give spare change out
when I'm with Annette,
but otherwise I will
hand out a dollar bill
when I'm approached.
She's being hard-hearted.
