footprints in the earth.....

Village Stream

By this rural
St Michael face
Angel daring demon
statue throught the market road
from a thirsty doorstep
glancing into the sky
presumably
relief is sure
but difficult and painful
embarking
frowning face fixed with fury
seeking directions
wandering,beckoning
through
dialect and senses
the aim
runs through the bush
standing trees
trapping growth
and yet the stream
sought earnestly in the earth
is not in sight
stumbling and irritated
ageless quest for meaning
the drums of this endeavour
have lost their rhythm
with the times and nature
and buckets and striving necks
for liquid treasure
everywhere and nowhere
suddenly a turn
in the hilly grassland
scenic with sun
and cassava and yam farmlands
should I faint and drink
forgotten is the stream
companions urge on
comradeship in humour
a descent into enquiry
depths give the stream
miraculously
upon sheer madness
absent is  a thundering current
bent backs
relieved
for a crack in the rock
and water
reaching low for an answer
to the tired tongue
and expelled air
in exasperation
through the lungs
dreams at the village stream

This poem is about a visit to the stream in my  village..it was a very tedious experience..the statue
at the begining of the poem is at the village entrance in front of the church..it signifies the begining
of the journey and the attempt of christianity to overcome underdevelopment and evil.
