 Resignation

For Belle

Behind a mask of untold pain,
Her thoughts do race and tumble.
She climbs steep paths of loneliness,
Where haltingly she stumbles.

Her time is spent quite busily
Her smile is fixed and cheerful…
The grinding stone will hone her heart
So delicate and tearful.

But work and hiding do not help
Alleviate her yearning…
She craves a hand to shape her pain
To stop the wheel from turning.

She feeds the beast within her soul,
Blood sacrifice presented.
Its offspring crawls upon weak legs
Forgotten and resented.

But on the surface all is well
She holds her shield securely
The status quo will see her through
And so she smiles demurely.
