Law

Precedents, statutes, torts and crimes.
These are meaningful words in turbulent times.
It's comforting to know
we have these guideposts,
these lodestars,
to judge right from wrong.
But, really, how comforted are we?
People breaking laws aren't fun to watch.
Others taking too much liberty are easy to catch.
So we have an expansive court system.
A judge to find fact and rule on law.
And then appeals for the guilty who
find the decisions too raw.
Again, where is the comfort in that?
Theoretically I'm happy and
the world's an orderly place.
If law did work,
I'd feel better about this rat race.
For those of us placing our hopes
for peace and societal tranquility
in the law,
I'm sorry to say loopholes abound.
And we can miss the rules of evidence on a rebound.
With so much to frustrate,
a suitor will always hesitate.
Police may catch a thief red-handed
and an assailant in the heat of the action.
What's to like about the overpopulation
of prisons?
My final conclusion is:
our consciences do not blend
with the total edifice of the legal system.
The relief we seek may not be in the court.
People are too dishonest for their own sport.
Here is yet another reason to follow the golden rule
and even learn right from wrong strictly in your school.
