If Everything Works Out, It's Charming
Meeting people can be such complicated business.
Just when you thought it wouldn't be.
It's a free society.
We might be quite charmed by the other's appeal.
Charmed by the charm even.
You like the glow,
the anticipation of future contact.
But when he loses his job,
this enchantment wears off.
People don't have the patience for a loser.
"I thought you liked me," the pushed-aside one is apt to say.
Who wants to keep talking to him without money?
Or enough money, to be more specific?
So much for the process.
You may stop and reflect:
how much do I have?
What is goodness worth, really?
You have your places to go
and your planes to catch.
Birds of a feather flock together.
That's how he realizes that you're not a loving person.
When he is drab and dull again.
Your social equals
won't be asking for some of what you've got.
You are very open-minded.
But the charm has evaporated from him
and others you take a liking to.
Who can blame you
for wanting to walk away from
the suffering aspect of life?
If you're a friend, then you love.
If you believe in love,
then you behave like a friend.
No--the truth is
you have to wish real hard.
When the money is not there,
the charm is all gone.
Or on its way out.
To think otherwise requires straining.
You have to go with your likes
and like a lot.
Some friends are exercises in charity.
So that's why you resent
being taught whether you love or not.
Just when you thought it wouldn't be.
It's a free society.
We might be quite charmed by the other's appeal.
Charmed by the charm even.
