 Stairway into Darkness

Sitting here this afternoon pondering my past;
The years slip by, wondering when will be my last.
I remember the numbness of my teens, the death;
Experimenting within myself, embracing Macbeth.
Without a trusted guide, I turn to introspection;
I felt separated from life, I had no real connection.
Walking inward on a journey to the center of Fred;
I hear a voice, to the stairway into darkness I am led.
I descend into this ancient underworld with some fear;
My pulse quickens as the light now begins to disappear.
Step by step, an excitement courses through my veins;
The loosening around my ankles of life's restrictive chains.
The darkness becomes oppressive, my heart beating fast;
Within this darkness now appears a new world that is so vast.
The light begins once again, yet it comes from another source;
Now passing away are all my feelings of conflict or remorse.
Suddenly, a secret peace rests on my heart in this land;
My brain try's to embrace the sensation, it try's to understand.
My senses are enhanced to a degree I have never before felt;
Freedom beckons me deeper into this world, my heart does melt.
Suddenly, fear rises up, I scream from deep within my soul;
I turn and run, feeling under my feet the burning of hot coal.
Ascending back up the stairway into the sun's bright light;
Outside into the world I was born into, I have taken flight.
The cool breeze nurtures me for a moment, my soul now rests;
Nestling between mother natures caring and loving breasts.
This experiment is now over for today, now what did it really learn;
The stairway into darkness awaits me until the next time I yearn.
