Therein Lies My Shame

My pride did take a beating
Because of deeds I'd done
But when my loved ones chastened me
I ignored them, every one.

Because I oft would be a part
Of things I knew were wrong
Yet even when my heart said no
I gladly went along.

Which brought me to the lowest point
I'd ever been before
And though I often felt remorse
It seemed I wanted more.

That's when I lost the rest of it
What remaining pride I had
Having played the hand life dealt to me
Knowing things would turn out bad.

But wait, I must be honest now
It's clear who was to blame
I lost my pride because of me
And therein lies my shame.
