Teach Us to Care and Not to Care

Give us something to act for.
This life isn't worth it so poor.
War and strife and jobless pathways.
They want us to have all the fun
while staring at a pointed gun.
We are very envious.
very desirous,
most ambitious,
of achieving the brighter way.
We have countless,
enduring scripts,
full of comedy, drama, and love.
But no--this situation is
one tragedy begetting another.
We can't win for losing.
OK, throw a cliche at me.
Why can't they leave life open and clear,
so we'd really know what's dear?
Otherwise we stay confused and paralyzed with fear.
"Love is not love that is mingled with regards
that stand aloof from the truth," to quote from Lear.
We aren't doing what we want to do,
we aren't acting what we wish to act.
Our skills can grow beyond measure,
but the means and ends must be filled with pleasure.
So we find life very haphazard.
That's not what we want to act for.
Teach us to care.
If we knew where we were going,
we'd care about getting there.
Are you glad to see
another husband and wife
in a suicide murder
on the news?
