 Roses of Blue

A young lady so beautiful, a girl so sweet;
Seeing past her many flaws, as I walk my beat.
She reminds me of my daughter, now long gone;
A teenage streetwalker, with the eyes of a fawn.
I see the track marks running up and down her arms;
She came to the city for fame from the country farm.
Strung out again, I can see the hunger in her face;
Seeking another fix, stopping the pain, let it erase.
She sees me, then ducks into the alley behind the bars;
I have arrested her ten times, she hides under the stars.
I enter the alley, looking hard in the darkness for her;
Calling out her name, ‘Melody!' Life is only a blur.
There are so many like her, I feel so unable to save;
I think of my daughter and the drugs that she did crave.
My shift is now over, my heart is torn apart again;
I see so much destruction, it appears drugs always win.
I go to the morgue after work, just as I always do;
Placing on each Jane Doe, a couple of roses of blue.
